Cresswell and the RAC Cresswell has considerable experience in developing and delivering teaching and training courses, including: internal CPD training; developing training courses for the Bat Conservation Trust; delivering IEEM training courses; providing specialist protected species training for Natural England; teaching EIA for the University of Hull; and teaching on the University of Bristol M.Sc. ‘Ecology and Management of the Natural Environment’. The RAC provides leadership regionally, nationally and internationally, through education, research and consultancy, to the agriculture, equine, food, drink, property and land-based industries ( http://www.rac.ac.uk/).
Who are the courses suitable for? Our courses are suitable for:
- professional ecologists, environmental managers and planners seeking to improve their expertise in particular areas; and
- recent graduates and those wishing to work towards a career in consultancy.
The aim of our courses is to train ecologists allowing them to work to the highest professional standards, and provide a range of practical skills to further career development.
The courses are Higher Education Funding Council England (HEFCE) accredited and can be taken individually, or in combination to lead towards a Postgraduate qualification in “Applied Ecology for Professionals” (subject to validation).
Attendance at our training courses can count towards the annual CPD requirements of IEEM members.
What do courses cover? Each course typically consists of a day’s training event, comprising: lectures; field work (where appropriate) to demonstrate and practice practical elements of the course; group discussion and/or case studies to demonstrate principles; and formal assessment.
Formal HEFCE accreditation is provided by the RAC.
Group sizes for our courses vary, up to a maximum of 25. If a course you are interested in is fully booked, consideration will be given to running additional courses to meet demand.

Protected Species
- We will be running a number of specialist courses on bats; badgers; dormice; otters; water voles; new BAP mammals; birds; great crested newts; reptiles; crayfish; terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates. Each course comprises separate elements describing survey techniques and mitigation, delivered at intervals throughout the year, and designed to develop your professional skills including licensing capabilities where appropriate.
- Plants and Habitats
- We will be running a number of courses covering the following subject areas: phase 1 and botanical surveys; wildflower identification; grass identification; and habitat creation and restoration schemes.
Course Assessment The assessment element varies for each course, but typically comprises written and/or practical elements to be completed during, or within six weeks of the course, as appropriate. Our training staff have extensive experience in teaching, having developed or taught courses for IEEM, SNCOs, local authorities, other consultants, the Highways Agency, the Bat Conservation Trust, and various undergraduate and post-graduate degrees.

Venue Courses will be run from our offices in Brimscombe, Stroud, conveniently situated only 20 minutes from Junction 13 of the M5. We have a large dedicated training/ conference room, and with our location in the Cotswolds, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to local sites for teaching the field work elements of the courses.
