Outline:
This course provides information on the legislative protection offered to otters, describes the types of impacts development projects (particularly road schemes) can have on otters, and how these impacts can be avoided, reduced or off-set. A field trip will demonstrate examples of otter mitigation techniques.

Target audience:
This course is aimed at those with an understanding of otter ecology and survey techniques (particularly participants of the Cresswell Associates course Otters (I): Ecology, Habitat Assessment and Survey Techniques) but who wish to learn more about legislation, impact assessment and mitigation (particularly in relation to impacts as a result of road schemes).
Aims:
To provide:
- information on legislation protecting otters and their holts, and licensing requirements
To assess:
- impacts of road schemes and other development projects on otters, including habitat loss, population/habitat fragmentation, road-related and incidental mortality and disturbance to resting sites
To demonstrate:
- good practice in mitigating impacts resulting from road schemes and other developments that affect otters including protecting key features, avoiding population/habitat fragmentation, safe road crossings, habitat restoration and artificial holts

Objectives:
At the end of the course you should be able to:
- describe relevant legislation and licensing issues relating to otters
- carry out appropriate impact assessments for development projects on otters
- design appropriate measures to avoid, reduce or off-set the impacts of development projects (particularly road schemes) on otters
Course content:
Lectures
- Legislation affecting otters and otter resting sites
- Assessing impacts of development projects on otters
- Mitigating impacts on otters
- Keeping otters off roads: appropriate design of safe crossings and fencing
Fieldwork
Visits to nearby sites to see fencing and tunnel designs
