Outline:
This course provides an introduction to the main families of British flowering plants in the context of phase 1 surveys, and covers identification (including the use of field guides and keys), legal protection, and sources of desk study information. A field trip will demonstrate field identification of the plant species that typify unimproved calcareous grassland.

Target audience:
The course is aimed at ecologists who are beginning to undertake phase 1 habitat surveys but who wish to improve their botanical skills to feel more confident when undertaking botanical survey work.

Aims:

To provide:

  • an overview of plant taxonomy and the main plant groups
  • legal protection covering wild flowers and status and distribution information
  • botanical resources and sources of information
  • wild plant ID with introduction to use of field guides and keys

To demonstrate:

  • how to approach the identification of wild plants in the field using a key and field guide
  • in the field, the plant species that typify unimproved calcareous grassland

Objectives:

At the end of the course you should be able to:

  • identify wild plants in the field with the aid of field guides and botanical keys
 
  • describe basic plant taxonomy
  • describe indicator flower species that characterise unimproved calcareous grassland

Course content:
Lectures

  • Plant taxonomy and main plant families
  • Legal protection and plant distribution information
  • Sources of botanical information
  • How to use botanical field guides and keys

Fieldwork

  • A visit to the unimproved calcareous grassland of Rodborough and Minchinhampton commons.
