Outline:
This course covers, in the context of development projects, the techniques for trapping, handling, marking and soft-release of water voles, and the necessary legislation and licensing requirements for these processes. A field trip will demonstrate these techniques in practice.

Target audience:
This course is aimed at those with an understanding of water vole ecology, survey and mitigation techniques (particularly participants of the Cresswell Associates course Water Voles (I): Ecology, Habitat Assessment and Survey Techniques and Water Voles (II): Legislation, Impact Assessment and Mitigation) but who wish to learn more about water vole trapping and relocation.
Aims:
To provide:
- training on how to trap water voles
- training on relocation techniques
- information on licensing requirements
To demonstrate:
- methods of trapping water voles
- water vole relocation techniques
Objectives:
At the end of the course you should be able to:
- design appropriate mitigation measures that require water vole capture and translocation
- apply for a license to trap water voles
