Outline:
This course provides information on the legislative protection offered to water voles, describes the types of impacts development projects can have on water voles, and how these impacts can be avoided, reduced or off-set. A field trip will demonstrate examples of water vole mitigation techniques.

Target audience:
This course is aimed at those with existing knowledge of water vole ecology and survey techniques (particularly participants of the Cresswell Associates course Water Voles (I): Ecology, Habitat Assessment and Survey Techniques), and who wish to learn more about legislation, impact assessment and mitigation.
Aims:
To provide:
- information on legislation protecting water voles and their burrows
To assess:
- impacts of development projects on water voles, including habitat loss, population/habitat fragmentation, incidental mortality and introduction of predators
To demonstrate:
- good practice in mitigating impacts resulting from developments that affect water voles
Objectives:
At the end of the course you should be able to:
- describe relevant legislation relating to water voles and their burrows

- carry out appropriate impact assessments for developments
- design appropriate measures to avoid, reduce or off-set the impacts of development projects on water voles
Course content:
Lectures
- Legislation protecting water voles and their burrows
- Valuation of water vole populations
- Assessing impacts of development projects on water voles
- Mitigating impacts on water voles
Fieldwork
- Visits to a current mitigation project to look at creation of receptor sites and implementation of mitigation options
