Outline:
An understanding of soil properties and how soils function is central to the success of habitat creation, restoration and translocation schemes. This course will provide an introduction to soils and their setting in the landscape, discuss soil formation and soil properties and highlight those characteristics of importance when working with soils. A range of soil types will be discussed.

Target audience:

This course is aimed at environmental consultants who need a basic understanding of the importance of soils and their properties within habitat creation/restoration schemes.

Aims:

To provide:

  • background information on how soils form and their key properties/functions
  • understanding of soil survey techniques
  • understanding of how soil properties should be taken into account when designing and undertaking habitat creation, restoration and translocation schemes

To demonstrate:

  • the importance of understanding soils and their properties to ensure the success of habitat creation, restoration and translocation schemes

Objectives:

At the end of the course you should be able to: 

  • describe how soils form and define their key properties

 

 
  • define what soil information is required for a particular project and how this should be acquired
  • define how soils should be handled or manipulated within a particular project to ensure success

Course content:

Lectures

  • What is soil and what functions does it provide?
  • Soil characteristics and the potential impacts on these and the consequences for projects
  • Legislation and policy
  • Information sources
  • Soil survey techniques
  • When should you be thinking about soil issues (using specific examples)?

Fieldwork
