Outline:
This course will review the impacts of roads on mammals, the latest research on mammal-related road traffic accidents (RTAs), and discuss mitigation techniques (including fencing and underpasses/overpasses) to reduce the impacts of roads on mammals and to reduce mammal-related RTAs. A field trip will show examples of mitigation in practice.

Target audience:

This course is aimed at those who wish to learn more about the issues associated with mammals and road developments, in terms of the main species affected by roads, the types of impacts caused by roads, and current research and guidance on types of crossing structures and mitigation

Aims:

To identify:

  • the mammal species that are effected by road developments and cause RTAs
  • the types of impacts caused by road developments on mammals including habitat loss and degradation, the loss of access to key features and habitat fragmentation
  • the scale, distribution and cost of mammal-related RTAs in the UK

To provide:

  • information on the latest research and guidance on reducing the impacts of roads on mammals and RTAs, including examples from the UK and Europe

To describe:

  • road fencing and safe crossing options (including culverts, tunnels, underpasses/overpasses, and green bridges) for mammals

To demonstrate:

  • mitigation techniques to reduce the impacts of roads on mammals and reduce mammal-related RTAs

Objectives:

At the end of the course you should be able to:

  • describe the types of impacts caused by roads on mammals and list which mammal species are most at risk
  • identify the issues associated with mammal-related RTAs in the UK
  • describe the various types of road fencing and safe crossing options that can be used to produce safe crossing areas
  • implement appropriate mitigation measures

Course content:

Lectures

  • The impacts of roads on mammals
  • The scale, distribution and cost of mammal-related RTAs
  • Current research and guidance on road safety and mammals
  • Designs for road fencing and safe crossing structures
  • Case studies to demonstrate successful and unsuccessful mitigation from the UK and Europe
