Target audience:
The course is aimed at ecological consultants who have an awareness of Phase 1 habitat survey and wildflower identification (particularly participants of the Cresswell Associates course Introduction to Wildflower Identification) but wish to gain more experience and confidence with identifying native grass species.
Aims:
To provide:
- introduction to grass taxonomy and main species groups
- introduction to the use of grass vegetative and flowering keys
- an understanding of key grass species for different habitat types
- grass identification resources
To demonstrate:
- grass identification in the field by both vegetative and flowering characteristics in a variety of habitats
Objectives:
At the end of the course you should be able to:
- confidently identify flowering and vegetative grass species with the use of keys

- describe some key grass species characteristic of common habitat types

Lectures
- Grass taxonomy
- Grass species groupings
- Vegetative and flowering keys
- Key species of grass in different habitats
Fieldwork
- Visits to nearby calcareous grassland, wetland, woodland and scrub habitats
