Outline:
This course provides information on the legislative protection offered to dormice, describes the types of impacts development projects can have on dormice, and how these impacts can be avoided, reduced or off-set. Several case studies with examples of impact assessment and mitigation will be explored in depth. A field trip will demonstrate examples of dormouse mitigation.

Target audience:
This course is aimed at those with an understanding of dormice biology and survey techniques (particularly participants of the Cresswell Associates course Dormice (I): An Introduction to Dormouse Biology, Survey Techniques and Legislation) who wish to learn more about legislation, impact assessment and mitigation in the context of development projects.
Aims:
To provide:
- information on legislation protecting dormice and licensing requirements
To assess:
- impacts of development projects on dormice and their habitat, including: habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, direct mortality and indirect effects
To demonstrate:
- good practice in mitigating impacts resulting from development projects that affect dormice and their habitat, including: translocation of hedgerows; new planting; reducing effect of fragmentation; and minimising mortality – phasing works, displacement, capture and translocation
Objectives:
At the end of the course you should be able to:
- describe legislation relating to dormice

- advise clients on licensing requirements
- carry out appropriate impact assessments for development projects on dormice habitat and populations
- design appropriate measures to avoid, reduce or off-set the impacts of development projects on dormice habitat and populations

Fieldwork
- Site visit to Freeman’s Farm quarry to see examples of mitigation in practice
