Outline:
This course provides training on investigating and evaluating bat roosts in structures including trees, buildings and bridges. A field trip will demonstrate how to carry out such surveys and what features to look for.

Target audience:
This course is aimed at those with an understanding of bat biology (particularly participants of the Cresswell Associates course Bats (I): An Introduction to Bat Biology and Survey Techniques) who wish to undertake surveys of structures (including trees, buildings and bridges) that might contain bat roosts.

Aims:

To provide:

  • an introduction to the ecology of roosting bats
  • information on how to carry out surveys of bat roosts in different structures including trees, buildings and bridges

To demonstrate:

  • how to assess bat roosts in different structures

Objectives:

At the end of the course you should be able to:

  • identify what bat surveys can be undertaken with and without licences
  • describe how different species of bats use different structures
  • identify the signs of bat activity at roosts
  • assess roosts and identify what type of further surveys may be required
 

Course content:

Lectures

  • An introduction to investigating bat roost sites
  • Bats in trees
  • Bats in buildings (including barns)
  • Bats in bridges
  • Assessing bat roost sites

Fieldwork

  • Site visit to see examples of structures potentially suitable for roosting bats
