Target audience:
This course is aimed at those with an understanding of bat biology (particularly participants of the Cresswell Associates course Bats (I): An Introduction to Bat Biology and Survey Techniques) who wish to plan and undertake bat activity surveys (including surveys to investigate bat commuting routes and foraging areas), with particular reference to development projects.

Aims:

To provide:

  • information on the foraging ecology of bats in relation to potential impacts from development projects
  • advice on how to carry out effective bat activity surveys

To demonstrate:

  • how to analyse bat echolocation calls

Objectives:

At the end of the course you should be able to:

  • describe the species-specific requirements of UK bats in relation to commuting routes and foraging areas
  • plan effective bat activity surveys
  • use broadband bat detectors and echolocation call analysis software to identify bats
