Outline:
This course provides information on the legislative protection offered to badgers, describes the types of impacts linear development projects (such as roads and pipelines) can have on badgers and their territorial resources, and how these impacts can be avoided, reduced or off-set. A field trip will demonstrate examples of badger mitigation on a road scheme.

Target audience:
This course is aimed at those with a background knowledge of badger biology and survey techniques (particularly participants of the Cresswell Associates course Badgers (I): Background Biology and Survey Techniques) but who wish to learn more about legislation, impact assessment and mitigation, particularly in relation to linear development projects.
Aims:
To provide:
- information on legislation protecting badgers and their setts
To assess:
- impacts of development projects on badgers
To demonstrate:
- good practice in mitigating impacts resulting from linear development projects (such as roads and pipelines) that affect badgers’ territorial resources, including: retaining habitat, maximising its value for badgers, and designing access corridors
Objectives:
At the end of the course you should be able to:
- describe and implement relevant legislation relating to badgers and their setts

- carry out appropriate impact assessments for linear development projects on badgers
- design appropriate measures to avoid, reduce or off-set the impacts of linear development projects on badger mortality and territorial resources
Course content:
Lectures:
- Legislation affecting badgers and badger setts
- Assessing the impacts of linear development projects on badgers
- Mitigating impacts of linear development projects on badger territorial resources
- Keeping badgers off roads: appropriate fence and tunnel design
Fieldwork:
Visits to nearby sites to see fencing and tunnel designs
