Outline:
This course provides an introduction to badger biology and social organisation, and explains how, in the context of development projects, this information should be used to plan and carry out badger surveys. A field trip will focus on identifying and classifying badger setts, looking for badger field signs and interpreting bait-marking surveys.

Target audience:
This course is aimed at those who wish to learn about badger biology, social organisation, and survey techniques, with particular reference to development projects.

Aims:

To provide:

  • background information on badger biology and social organisation so as to understand when, where and how surveys should be carried out
  • training on how to carry out badger surveys, including classifying setts, recognising field signs and assessing territory size through bait-marking

To demonstrate:

  • badger field survey techniques

Objectives:

At the end of the course you should be able to: 

  • describe the life history of badgers, their social organisation, and theories on why they defend territories, and how these influence when, where and how surveys for these species should be carried out
 
  • define and identify main, annexe and subsidiary setts
  • identify badger field signs
  • carry out and interpret bait-marking surveys
  • carry out badger sett surveys

Lectures:

  • Background biology
  • Territoriality in badgers
  • Badger sett classification
  • Survey methods and field signs

Fieldwork:

Visits to nearby sites to identify field signs, find and classify badger setts and demonstrate bait marking
